Call and Response : Fr Johnson - 2007-10-20
Some months ago a brother approached me with a peculiar situation in his life. He started a business jointly with another person (both of them are Christians). Initially the business was carried out smoothly. However as days passed he felt that something was wrong and began to enquire about the same. The enquiry revealed that some unchristian transactions had been undertaken and his partner justified it by stating that the business could not prosper if such transactions were not undertaken. Both of them frequented Tabor to listen to the Word of God and witness the miracles. They also persuaded others to walk in the path of divine experience and yet the partner commented “we need not mix business and going to Tabor”
Faith and God experience remains with us throughout our lifetime. Knowing that the two cannot be separated is spirituality. The call of Christians is rooted in spirituality. We read in the Gospel of St Mark that Jesus calls his disciples: “He went up the mountain and called him those whom he wanted, and they came to him”. (Mark 3:13)  Here the mountain top is the place of God experience. Jesus has called us (whom he likes) to that place. He certainly wants us to give up everything that prevents us from climbing the mountain top and reach out to him. Else the result will be the experience that Judas had. Even when he was with Jesus, Judas was restless. He pursued his desires of wealth, world, self and authority which led him to his miserable end. Those who are called to the mountain top are not expected to lead the life of the valley. It is in the valley that negative thoughts creep in. Those atop the mountain have got deliverance from all that is negative. If the ways of the valley creep in, the foundation of spirituality will be shaken. People whose spirituality has been shaken think that practical life and spirituality are two different things. There is no relevance of Christian call in them. A genuine Christian is one who remains with the Lord who called, proclaims Him, and wins over the one who opposes him and thus lives his call.(Mk 3:14-15)
Blessed Virgin Mary is the first among those who responded well to his call. The Church specially prays to her in the month of October, that the number of those respond positively to this call may increase. Pray that the whole world be filled with those who follow Christ’s call. Let everybody experience the all pervading experience of God in the universe.
