Testimony of Mr Thomas Mathew
Managing Director Life Insurance Corporation of India
“The Mighty One has done great things for me. Holy is His name.” Luke 1:49
My name is Thomas Mathew, am 54 years old, married, with three grown up children, and holding the position of the Managing Director of Life Insurance Corporation of India. At the end of April 2007, I got a chance to attend a fruitful retreat at Tabor Bhavan. God showered grace of peace on me and Fr Joshi the Director gave me directions for prayer which I continued diligently. He had also asked me to check my heart and stomach, however since I have had no problems till then I did not pursue the same.
After a 10 day visit to UK and USA, on my return to office in the forenoon of 20 June 2007, I had a chest pain in the office and I called for a doctor. The ECG revealed that a massive heart attack was in progress. When asked to which hospital I had to be taken, I stated “Breach Candy”. The words that I spoke at that critical moment were to save my life. “Before a word is on my tongue, you know it completely, O Lord” (Psalm 139:4). My friends rushed me to the hospital and informed my family. No time was lost in the hospital. God blessed me with the best medical attention. I was soon shifted from the emergency to ICU. I gradually improved while my family and I prayed the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet incessantly. My family sought prayers from Tabor, Divine and Faridabad and all dear ones.
The evening of 21 June, while I was in the ICU, I started vomiting blood. As the bleeding continued without any control, the doctors did an endoscopy and found that my alimentary tract was torn at the junction between the food pipe and stomach. The tear could not be stitched. With every passing moment, I was losing blood uncontrollably and my Blood Pressure dropped. Panic and alarm filled the atmosphere. I was sedated. The doctors told my family that the situation was critical. My family continued praying the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet. The doctors tried several ways to arrest the bleeding, but all their efforts were in vain. A whole new team of specialists were called. They also tried hard. The blood would not clot since I had been on thrombolytic therapy (blood thinners) for the past 2 days, because of the heart attack. The situation was very ‘grim’. Meanwhile, my family continued to pray sitting outside ICU – because they knew that only God can save their Dad. Before the doctors could try their last resort of embolising the torn area, they decided to do one last endoscopy and survey the area. This was to be my third endoscopy that night. On endoscopy, they found that the bleeding had considerably reduced. Praise the Lord
They then clipped the affected blood vessels. It was 2.30 a.m. then. I had bled for over six and half hours (I was given 8 pints of blood i.e 2.8 litres). I was put on the ventilator. The team of doctors then met my family and told them that “Luckily the blood has clotted”. My family then requested a priest to administer the “anointing of the sick”. I was on the ventilator for 8 days and in the ICU for a total of 12 days.
That critical night I saw the vision of GOD the Father. He was at my bedside looking lovingly at me with a calm and affectionate smile. He came in person to rescue me from the jaws of death. ALLELULIA.
People around kept telling me that any doctor other than the doctor treating me, Dr F E Udwadia, would have given up that night. The Lord prompted me to ask for Breach Candy Hospital and that saved my life. All praise be to JESUS, I never bled again! The pace at which I improved surprised the doctors. When I was to be discharged, I thanked the doctor for his efforts in giving my life back. The doctor corrected me. He said “God gave your life back”. Praise the Lord!
After I was brought home, I started running a fever. The doctors sent for all the possible blood tests. I was tested positive for Dengue. Again anxiety filled the air and we prayed hard. The repeat test came that evening and I was diagnosed negative for Dengue. ALLELUIA.
After that I improved steadily without any setbacks. On 8th August, I went for a test called Stress Thallium Test. On 9th, I visited the doctor. Everybody used to ask me when my angiogram was to be performed. On 9th we prayed the Chaplet of Tears asking for a miracle cure. Our prayer was answered immediately because when we met Dr Udwadia he stated that there was no need for angiogram as I had no clots. The damaged portion of the heart was healing. Praise God. I was allowed to resume work and even travel. Only diet restriction and medicines were to be continued. ALLELUIA
